Open Day Celebrations

Celebrations will get underway at the College Open Day on Saturday 19 March, when fun-packed 1960s-inspired activities are planned across all the curriculum areas and the Whittingham Road campus will swing to the sounds of the 60s hit parade.

Visitors can enjoy the full Open Day experience while being transported back in time by the sights and sounds of 1966, the year the College’s Whittingham Road campus first welcomed students from Halesowen and the surrounding area.

Initially, the College employed just forty members of staff and offered fewer than fifty full-time and part-time courses over three curriculum areas. However, things have changed considerably over the past 50 years – hundreds of staff makes Halesowen College one of the biggest employers in the area and 16 curriculum areas deliver 37 A Level subjects and well over 100 full time Vocational courses to thousands of students. In addition, thousands more students now benefit from a wide range of Apprenticeship programmes, higher education opportunities and part time courses for work and leisure.

Facilities at the College have also moved with the times and the original single block has been replaced by a modern campus, which allows students to access the equipment necessary to meet the needs of a 21st Century curriculum. A programme of sustained investment in recent years has led to significant development of the Whittingham Road campus and the completion of a new Performing Arts space (Block 13) in August will be a highlight in our celebratory year.

Plans to compile a history of the College over the 50 years are underway and a specially designated Facebook page and email address have been set up in the hope that former staff and students will post photographs and share their positive memories of Halesowen College.

We are keen that members of the College Alumni will take part in the Open Day Celebrations on 19 March and join in with other events in the coming months, making it a year to remember.

The photo features three generations of the Aston family celebrating their connection with Halesowen College. Luke Aston, aged 16, is following in his father Mark’s footsteps by studying Catering while his grandparents, Kath and Tony Aston, are members of the College’s O50s Club.
